Types Of Savings Account You Can Open In India

For many of us, our first Bank Account is our parents' open or the one we hold with them. The moment we start earning, we realise we need to secure our hard-earned funds in our Savings Account. This is when we visit the bank for opening an account and start our independent financial journey.

In India, you can do multiple online Savings Account opening as options to choose from. Let us understand them in detail.

Regular Accounts

This is the most common one where there are limits on the funds deposited. However, there are restrictions on withdrawals. You can do so only through cheque payment slips or ATMs. You are given a chequebook after opening the account and need to maintain an average monthly balance.

Joint Accounts

If the account gets operated by more than one person, it is a Joint Account. In India, such accounts are more of a family account where four people are named as account holders. If all the holders are adults, the banks offer a Debit Card to them. All adult account holders can jointly operate the account.

Salary Accounts

Most organisations provide such accounts to their employees when they join. Such an account is called Zero-Balance Account, and here, you need not maintain a monthly average balance. Generally, these account holders are provided with an instant welcome kit that includes a chequebook, passbook, Debit or ATM Card, and Online Banking access credentials.

Online Accounts

Also called an online account, this is ideal for those who want to manage their banking needs seamlessly. You also get high Savings Account interest rates instead of the Regular Account. You also need not pay any account maintenance fees and no requirement of minimum balance maintenance too.

Senior Citizen Accounts

Specially meant for the older people, particularly those over 60 years and above, they are offered higher interest rates, around 0.5%, on their savings. They are also given waivers maintaining a minimum balance and offered better interest rates on term deposits.

Women Accounts

Ladies over 18 years and above can open a Saving Bank Account that comes with maximum benefits. Opening such accounts mean higher interest rates. Women also receive discounts on other bank products and complimentary Insurance cover. They also get Debit Cards with high withdrawal and shopping limits.

Minor Accounts

A Joint Account, here the primary holder is the minor and operated by one of the parents or guardians until the minor turns 18 years. Once turned 18, the account automatically gets converted to a Regular or Joint Account.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

For encouraging all Indians, especially the lower-income groups to open a Bank Account offline or on the Banking app, the Indian Government launched this unique Savings Account. There is no average monthly balance maintenance commitment. Account-holders get Rupay Debit Cards, and free Accident Insurance Cover worth Rs. 1 lakh and Insurance cover of Rs. 30,000.

What Does Digital Banking Mean?

At its most basic level, Online Banking uses technology to deliver Digital Banking services. Some wrongly believe that it simply means using an online platform, but it involves more. Using the most updated technologies at all levels and across all service delivery platforms is what it means to be digital.

It acts the same in the branches,  head office, online service delivery platform, banking app, ATMs, and point-of-sale machines. The difficulty with viewing banking online overlooks the bank's other digital initiatives. The internet or mobile platform serves as the front end of the banking service delivery.

There are many middle and back-end functions, including risk management, treasury, product development, marketing, relationship-based sales teams, etc. These functions should get digitised for the bank to be considered a Digital Bank.

What does Digital Banking involve?

Is it worthwhile for banks to go digital if it means more than the Android or iOS apps? According to a survey, nearly half of them believe that digital adoption is crucial for developing client relationships and that it is also the most persuasive argument. Here are a few instances of how banks benefit from the same:

Efficacy

Despite holding many interactions with retail clients, banking has been unusually hesitant to take advantage of any technological potential. Many banking systems have got digitised, but unlike other customer-facing businesses, the entire system is still not operating as a single digital entity.

Airlines and logistics companies, for example, rely heavily on technology to run smoothly, yet most banks are yet to achieve that level of efficiency. Banks consider digital as a valuable tool than the foundation upon which their systems are built. It enables banks to encourage people to use Internet Banking to access their Savings Account.

Cost savings

Functions are automated. So, redundancies are lowered, and this results in cost savings. There are, however, additional benefits, such as synergies resulting from access to more qualitative data and shorter market response times. When customers open a Bank Account online, banks save a lot of money.

Increased competitiveness

Digital Banking in India lets banks reach a larger customer base and build closer relationships with younger, tech-savvy generations. Banks deliver services of equal quality to compete with new-age tech behemoths and innovative Fintech start-ups.

Agility

Digital banks are more adaptable than traditional banks. Their automated features are built to work differently and respond to market shifts. For example, during the financial crisis of 2008, there was a heightened emphasis on risk management. Banks require years to train and attract enough risk professionals to manage their assets properly.

How Is A Savings Account Unique?

One of the first accounts we ever open is Savings Account. Whether it is an account we open as a minor with our parents or as an adult, a Regular Saving Account helps inculcate a sense of financial discipline. It encourages us to save money while we are young. Yet, most use these accounts for basic transactions like cash deposit and withdrawal as they are unaware of its uniqueness, which are:

Easy, anytime transactions

The best part about modern-day accounts is they are anytime, anywhere. This attributes to the fact that all banks today offer Digital Banking services. You need to set up your Online Banking account and download the banking app. It lets you send and receive payments quickly.

Bill payments and online shopping

You can use your Bank Saving Account to pay all your utility bills. They get paid in cash, cheque, or online transactions. Use Internet Banking channels to pay for your online shopping orders, eliminating the need for cash.

Debit and ATM cards

When you open a Bank Account, your bank sends across a welcome kit. This kit includes two things: your Online Banking details and a Debit or ATM Card. Those uncomfortable with online transactions use their Debit Cards to withdraw cash. Use it to shop online, and retail stores and the money gets directly debited from your account.

Balance maintenance

This is a prerequisite you should know before an online Saving Account opening. Banks always decide the minimum amount to park in the account, failing which you get charged a penalty for non-maintenance. If you hold an account in a public sector bank, you may need to maintain up to Rs. 1,000.

Private sector banks, meanwhile, require you to maintain a minimum balance between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. There are also special Zero-Balance Accounts, called Salary Accounts, that do not require minimum balance maintenance.

Interest rates

The savings parked in your account earn you interest. Depending upon the bank where you hold account, the amount parked, and the balance maintained, you make decent Savings interest rates on them. While the interest rate is not that high, banks still provide a bonus and disburse it once or twice a year. Generally, it ranges between 3.5% to 7%.

Deposits and withdrawals

There are no specified limits on the money you can deposit in your account. However, banks have a limit on the withdrawal amount and the frequency of withdrawals. You can make up to five withdrawals a month. Also, there is a limit on ATM withdrawals wherein you use your bank ATM and other ATMs three to five times a month. If you use other bank ATMs over the free prescribed limit, you get charged a small fee for the same.

The Saving Account is famous for these reasons. If operated responsibly, your account serves as the first investment instrument that boosts your corpus.
